The Grotto at the National Shrine of Lourdes, used as a place of devotion for over 200 years, is situated above the campus of Mount Saint Mary’s University. MAROTTA/MAIN ARCHITECTS designed a new center as a place to greet the Grotto's many visitors. The new center provides an information gallery and museum presenting the history of the Grotto, gift shop, director’s office, and restroom facilities. A sacristy was added to the chapel.
Natural materials including glass, stone, and wood were used as the base building materials to mirror the surrounding landscape. Continuing phases will include the creation of new memorial gardens eliminating vehicles from the grotto site.
